Future Foundry Take Over Turner Contempory Margate

Future Foundry took over the Foyle Rooms and hosted free up-cycling workshops and demo’s run by young makers from Future Foundry's network. There was a panel discussion with invited guests Kresse Wesling (Co-Founder of Elvis and Kresse) and Alex Noble (Designer, Filmmaker, Fashion Industry Activist), Laetitia Forst and Cathryn Anneka Hall (PhD textile design researchers). More guests TBC. The panel discussed the issues facing the fashion and textiles industry as well as the challenge posed by ethical and sustainable designers plus a new generation of consumers. They also shared their experiences in starting a sustainable business using waste, reverse and backwards design and the Circular Economy. The Panel: Laetitia Forst and Cathryn Anneka Hall are PhD textile design researchers with the Centre for Circular Design at University of the Arts London. Both their research explores ways of designing textiles for the circular economy. They approach the problems of blended textiles by creating design driven solutions for ease of recyclability. Laetitia’s project takes a pro-active approach through the use of design for disassembly. This is the design of products and materials that can be taken apart to divert their components from waste streams. Cathryn Anneka explores the textile recycling industry spanning the sorting, recycling and spinning of waste textiles into new yarn. This considers the whole system towards circular fibres of the future. As part of both of their ongoing research Laetitia and Cathryn collaborate on events and workshops that bring together academics and industry to talk about how to design for a circular economy. Launching fund raising ventures and sustainable fashion collectives using industry ‘waste’. He uses multi media art practice to communicate social and environmental impacts of consumption and effects on society, most recently with his immersive film installation titled ‘Who AreThe Savs?” _______________________ About Fashion Revolution: Fashion Revolution Week seeks to address and raise awareness of the impact that fashion and textiles industry has across the globe including pollution, exploitation and habitat and resource destruction. About Future Foundry: Future Foundry's projects bring young people together with people in their communities that can help them progress – creating connections and highlighting pathways. They promote the creative industries and encourage people to be inspired by, and access creative training and cultural events.
